Five Minute Friday - Unexpected

On Fridays around these parts we stop, drop, and write.
For fun, for love of the sound of words, for play, for delight, for joy and celebration at the art of communication.
For only five short, bold, beautiful minutes. Unscripted and unedited. We just writewithout worrying if it’s just right or not.
Won’t you join us?
    1. Write for 5 minutes flat – no editing, no over thinking, no backtracking.
    2. Link back here and invite others to join in.
    3. Most importantly: leave a comment for the person who linked up before you – encouraging them in their writing!
OK, are you ready? Give me your best five minutes on:

Unexpected…

GO

I'm really wary right now of any word with "expect" in it. Evidently, I have disappointed some of my friends because I have done the unexpected. But what was so truly unexpected?

What *I* did not expect was to lose Mama this soon. I did not expect to have so much responsibility for helping my Dad - EVER. I did not expect to be a stepmother and grandmother to so many people who have such REAL stuff going on in their lives. I did not expect to be having the "full human experience", as I like to call it, because I have hidden from it for so long.

But it was not unexpected... it just wasn't unexpected that I would have a love of words. That I would want to find people who share that love. It is funny when people who hear me talk say, "maybe you should write" and then they get surprised when I do write and actually enjoy it. So strange that what one finds to be totally expected is so totally unexpected for another.

What I also did not expect is that this writing exercise would be so hard. My fingers are just conditioned to backspace and edit. Freewriting without stopping is so much harder than I would have expected. I wish that I would bring more of this tendency to edit into my speaking. It might save me some embarrassment and apologies. ;)

STOP

Now let's go over to Lisa-Jo's place and see what other people have to say about "unexpected"!

  1. Haha -- I love your last paragraph!! :)

I linked up with the first time, and it was "unexpected" how much fun it was for me!

I am sorry for your loss, and for the weight of caregiving that you now have.
    Hang in there...

  4. Oh girl, I totally get this! The whole five minute limit was positively torturous for me... the urge to edit was almost irresistible. I actually did take seven minutes instead of five.... :-D
